Lose weight with Joe!

Share and Comment

As I mentioned in a tweet yesterday my plan is to lose 20 pounds by Affiliate Summit East which starts August 15th.  That gives me 67 days.  Actually I started last Saturday so that gives me a couple more but all in all it isn’t a ton of time so it is time to get started.

Here is my plan:

1.  More exercise – For the next couple weeks I want to try to log 15-20 miles walking/running. If I see some good weight loss from that I will keep it going. If not I will probably add in some other sort of workout. Either way I will probably add in one or two weight workouts each week just to make sure I lose fat and not muscle.

2.  Eat better – I love burgers. I love chicken wings. I love pizza. I love bacon.  I love Reese’s Cups.  Pretty much if it is bad for you I can eat a ton of it. But that is gonna start to change. I will do my best to try and limit myself to one fast food meal a week. I want to try and get more fruits and vegetables in also. Generally speaking I love fruit but I just don’t eat enough of it.  No more cake and ice cream. Only 1 cookie instead of 6.

Also I am gonna try to make the portions smaller. Instead of the 44 oz steak I will try a 12 oz one. Instead of a double cheeseburger I will go with a single (or even a grilled chicken sandwich). Instead of eating 2 pounds of chicken wings I will cut back to maybe a half pound. And also I will try to get rid of the fries. Basically I will try to just eat reasonable portions. Not necessarily the serving sizes listed on packages (have you seen how little 3/4 of a cup of Capt’n Crunch is???)

And better snacks. Instead of sitting down and eating a half bag of Doritos I will eat some carrots. Instead of a big plate of cheese and crackers I will eat an apple.  And I will stop considering a Quarter Pounder a snack (was I wrong to think of that as a snack? I mean, come on… I didn’t even have fries with it).

3.  Drink better – For the most part I usually down 4-6 cans of soda a day and maybe have 2 glasses of water.  That will change. I am gonna do my best to limit myself to one can of regular soda per day. For the most part I hate diet soda but diet Mt. Dew isn’t terrible so I might have a couple of those.  But gone are the Super Big Gulps. Also I will try to drink more water. And taking a cue from a friend of mine try drinking more tea.

So that is my basic plan. Nothing earth shattering. I don’t want to call it a diet or anything but I think it might be time to start eating a bit better. When I started last Saturday I was 218.2 so I need to get to 198.2 to meet my goal.

Does anyone want to join me in this challenge? You don’t have to commit to 20 pounds or anything either. It could be 10, it could be 5.  But if you are interested in losing weight alongside me just leave a comment below. Not enough motivation?  OK, how about this: For every pound lost by the people who comment below I will donate $2 to Affiliate Marketers Give Back.  (and just so I don’t go broke I will cap my donation at $500)  Just leave a comment below and let me know you want to join me and let me know how much you would like to lose. I will post weekly updates on my progress and you can just leave your progress in the comments.

  1. Joe I am with you, I was planning on dropping a few pounds and now I have a reason.

  2. Kate says:

    I'm in.

  3. Sounds like we are twins for the foods we like – imagine if you had really good pizza out there… it's a curse!

Are you using any organized diet plan like Weight Watchers?

One thing that makes massive consumption of water easier is to get one of those 5 gallon water coolers near your desk. They are like $100 at Home Depot and I've got one in the office and one in the kitchen.

    • We do have one really good pizza joint in town. Probably the best pizza I have ever had but I haven't had enough to really know. Maybe in August I will have to try a couple different places in NY.

My wife is doing Weight Watchers and I am counting points with her but I don't want to go to any of the meetings or anything. The thing that bugs me about that program though is a piece of salmon is more points than a Quarter Pounder. Doesn't make much sense.

I will have to look into getting some sort of water cooler in my office. That would probably help a lot.

      • We'll need to get a pizza date together in NYC.

They used to have a program on WW called Core, and my wife still does it – it's more about eating as much healthy stuff as you want… until you are full.

I did it a couple years ago and it worked well, but they phased it out – probably because it didn't require meetings and their pre-made meals were not part of it.

I am in too Joe. I want to lose about 40-50 lbs. I don't eat right, and like you, I also drink way too much soda. My pop of choice is Dr. Pepper and I tried Diet Dr. Pepper, but quite frankly, I don't like diet soda, but I am thinking that I should switch. Also they say that high fructose corn syrup is really bad for you and at least if I switch, I will eliminate that from soda.

Of course there is a lot of other stuff that has HFCS in it that I am wanting to stay away from. I will do this challenge with you though. 🙂

  5. I'm not looking to drop as much as some, but I need some accountability. I think all this running I've been doing makes me think I can eat whatever I want. I'm hoping to drop a mere 5lbs, but add it to your total!

  6. Joe, thanks for the invite via twitter. I'm in! I started right at 200 and am down to 189.5 as of this morning! So let's count that 10.5 pounds. My wife and I are doing the south beach diet, which unlike the name does not include blue water, sandy beaches and colorful alcoholic drinks. I was duped. But the diet is actually pretty good and with commuting to work on my bike a few days a week, I'm feeling great.

    So count me in bud!
