Have you ever talked to a merchant who questions the power and effectiveness of affiliate marketing? Do you know bloggers who don’t think affiliate marketing is a good way to make money? Is there anyone you know who has wondered if money can actually be made with affiliate marketing? Well, here is a quick case study.
Greg Hoffman, one of the top Outsourced Program Managers around, recently posted about how one of the programs he manages did more than 1000 orders in 24 hours.
How did this happen? Well, there are a few factors that contributed to this. Let’s take a look at some:
1. Great product – This is a big key. If you have the right product it will sell. And this merchant, Flirty Aprons, has some great products. Obviously they sell aprons but the aprons they sell are much nicer than the standard, solid color aprons you see in commercial kitchens or in many home kitchens as well. These are “designer” aprons that kind of have a throwback feel to them and conjur up memories of June Cleaver in the kitchen. These are great looking aprons and in no way are trashy aprons. These aprons are very classy looking and all in all a great product that people want.

2. Great marketing and product name – If this company was named Designer Aprons or Cute Aprons or something like that I don’t think they would get as many sales. But Flirty Aprons? Genius! Let’s face it, most of the world likes flirting whether it is with a stranger or your wife. Women like flirting with guys to get attention, guys like flirting with girls for… how shall we say it tactfully… more primal reasons??? Anyway by marketing these aprons as “Flirty Aprons” it makes it a product that women want to wear to come across as attractive to their husbands or boyfriends and the guys want their ladies to wear them because they look great in them. Take a look at some of the apron styles at the bottom of the page and you will see what I mean.
3. Great timing – Flirty Aprons are the perfect gift for Mother’s Day. They are great gifts for wives, mothers, aunts, daughters… pretty much any woman who spends any time in the kitchen. And these are great looking aprons so guys will want to see their wives wearing them. So the timing of this great offer was perfect to capitalize on this holiday where guys are always wondering what to get their wives. And I am sure there were many orders for multiple aprons as guys bought them for their wives, moms, daughters, sisters, and any other mothers they know.
4. Great Offer Management – Hats off to Greg Hoffman on this one. He took this special Mother’s Day offer of 20% off all aprons and 60% off a specific brand and went out to the bloggers he has contact with and have done well in the past. Within a few hours of this offer going live he had a couple hundred active affiliates. Yeah, Greg could have waited to release this offer to everyone through the affiliate networks and just let people find it but he was proactive in this one and sought out people who could drive traffic and sales. Within 9 hours they sold 33% more aprons than they did all month last April. Pretty amazing.
So you combine all those factors and you have 1000 orders in less than 24 hours. That has to be at least $25,000 in sales (most aprons are $25+) and at least $3750 paid out in affiliate commissions. What can we learn from this?
Affiliates: It pays to talk to your affiliate managers. Many times you can find out about deals like this 20% off sale ahead of time and have blog posts or sites prepped for when the deal hits rather than playing catch up. Also keep an eye out for holidays and special occasions where certain products will sell better than other times of they year. Some of these are easy (costumes for halloween, flowers for Valentines Day) but did you ever think aprons would be this big for Mother’s Day? Sometimes you have to be a bit creative in your thinking.
Affiliate Managers – Take the time to build good relationships with affiliates and do the leg work to have them lined up for deals like this. Contact them ahead of time and don’t just sit and wait for them to come to you. Also talk to the merchants and work out some deals like this that affiliates can take advantage of.
